Proposed New Standard Supports High-Strength Steel in Bridge Cables

A new standard proposal from global standards development organization ASTM International (West Conshohocken, Pennsylvania) aims to enhance the technology used to make high-strength steel wire and steel-wire rope used in bridges.

The new standard is being developed by ASTM’s A01 committee on steel, stainless steel, and related alloys. It will apply to bridge cable wire with hot-rolled wire rod.

“Bridges play a major role and occupy an important position with today’s modern transportation,” says ASTM member Xiaohong Xu of Jiangyin Xingcheng Special Steel Works Co. (Jiangyin, Jiangsu, China).

“The development of this standard will bring the latest scientific research to industrialization, as well as promote the application of new technology of high-strength wire rod,” Xu explains. “The proposed standard will provide great guidance for enterprises involved with wire rod, galvanized steel, and cable manufacturing.”

The committee encourages representatives of relevant research institutions and manufacturing entities to assist in the development of the WK58959 standard, formally titled “Specification for Hot-Rolled Wire Rod for Bridge Cable.”
