Reviews Sought on Revised Application Standard for Thermal Spray Coatings

NACE International, the American Welding Society (AWS) (Miami, Florida), and SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) collaborated to revise an industry standard on the application of metallic thermal spray coatings, and the groups are now soliciting feedback as part of the review process.

The original standard was approved in 2003.

Interested stakeholders are invited to participate in a review of the revised NACE No. 12/AWS C2.23M/SSPC-CS 23.00 joint standard, which contains requirements for the application of zinc and aluminum alloys to steel substrates using thermal spray coatings, often referred to as metalizing.

Stakeholders include government and private facility owners, project specifiers, thermal spray contractors, thermal spray coating inspectors, and manufacturers of thermal spray application equipment and supplies.

According to standard developers, this joint standard includes requirements for surface preparation, coating application, repair of coating defects, measurement of coating thickness, adhesion testing of the applied coating, and application of sealers and topcoats over the thermally sprayed metal coating.

Not included in this standard are requirements for design and fabrication, thermal spray equipment qualification, coating selection, and operator and inspector certification.

According to SSPC, anyone interesting in obtaining a full copy of the standard for review and comment or in joining the consensus review committee is asked to contact standards development specialist Aimée Beggs by May 15, 2017.
