The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) committee TC 35, “Paints and varnishes,” recently approved a new subcommittee, ISO/TC 35/SC 15, “Protective coatings; concrete surface preparation and coating application.” This committee was initiated by NACE International members participating in the ANSI accredited U.S. TAG (Technical Advisory Group) to ISO TC 35. TAG members identified concrete coating and preparation as a gap in the ISO work program and agreed that NACE would be in a strong position to bring needed leadership to this area.
In addition to proposing an initial work program for the new subcommittee, NACE applied for and was granted the Secretariat for the committee on behalf of ANSI, the official U.S. member of ISO. As the Secretariat, NACE has the responsibility to nominate a chair for the committee and proposed NACE member Mike MeLampy.
MeLampy has shown strong leadership in numerous NACE committees and activities and he is also participating in several ISO committees. He has experience in helping committees to develop documents through the standards consensus process, which has resulted in documents used by industry.
Also, in support of this new effort, NACE member Steve Poncio agreed to accept the chair position of the NACE U.S. TAG to the new ISO concrete coating committee. Poncio is a NACE instructor and has also led and served on numerous NACE committees.
Membership on the NACE U.S. TAG to ISO TC 35 is open to all U.S. national interested parties who indicate that they are directly and materially affected by the activity of the U.S. TAG.
More information on the activities of the TAG is available on the NACE web site under ISO TC 35 TAG - U.S. TAG to ISO_TC 35 Paints and Varnishes, or by contacting TAG Administrator Ed Barrett, the NACE strategic standards developer, at 281-228-6295.
