U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Seeks Comments on New Strategic Plan

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) (Rockville, Maryland) is seeking public comments on its latest strategic plan draft, covering the fiscal years of 2018 through 2022.

According to the commission, the draft establishes a framework for the next four years for the NRC to achieve its mission to license and regulate the nation’s civilian use of radioactive materials to provide reasonable assurance of adequate protection of public health and safety. The draft also serves to promote common defense and security goals; to protect the environment; and provide an overview of the NRC’s responsibilities, key challenges, management priorities, objectives, and key activities.

The draft plan is largely consistent with the previous plan (FY 2014-2022), the group says, with continued focus and commitment to the NRC’s mission and strategic goals of safety and security. The most notable change is a new vision statement. It also includes minor updates and editorial enhancements.

All interested individuals may submit comments on the draft within 30 days of publication on the Federal Register notice. The draft will be available on the NRC’s website.

Public comments may be submitted online through the federal government’s rulemaking website by using Docket ID NRC-2017-0153, or by mail. The full mailing address is available with the NRC’s official news release. Comments will be summarized and provided to the NRC for consideration in its finalization of the plan.

The NRC issued its first such plan in September 1997. As required, it has been updated every four years since then. The 2018-2022 edition is due to U.S. regulatory authorities by Feb. 5, 2018.
