Strategic Alliance Formed for Predictive Corrosion Management Solution

Inspection, verification, testing, and certification company SGS (Geneva, Switzerland) and oilfield services provider Baker Hughes, a GE company (BHGE) (Houston, Texas, USA), announced a strategic alliance agreement for the joint deployment and commercialization of BHGE’s real-time software and sensor-based predictive corrosion management (PCM) solution.

According to the companies, the system will enable asset owners to increase their ability to monitor their facilities, as well as detect and predict corrosion issues using real-time data powered by ultrasonic sensing technology and advanced analytics.

“This partnership with BHGE will enable SGS to broaden its asset integrity service offering with advanced digital inspection solutions that will greatly benefit our oil and gas clients,” says François Marti, chief operating officer for SGS in North America.

The system generates wall thickness and temperature measurements from ultrasonic sensors placed on critical equipment such as pipes, tanks, and vessels. The solution applies advanced analytics, the companies explain, resulting in a real-time assessment of data that has traditionally been gathered through manual inspections.

While particularly valuable to downstream oil and gas, petrochemical, and upstream asset operators, the companies say the system can help any industry segment challenged by corrosion.

“We are looking forward to working with SGS to accelerate deployment of PCM, a predictive digital solution that is becoming a benchmark for corrosion monitoring across several industries,” says Holger Laubenthal, CEO of BGHE’s inspection technologies group.

According to the companies, the combination of the inspection company’s broad network and asset integrity expertise with the oilfield services provider’s technological expertise is designed to ensure the system’s rapid development while driving scale in the market for inspection and maintenance services and technology.
