Thin Film Conversion Coatings Provide Solutions to Metal Pretreatment Processes

Henkel (Düsseldorf, Germany) is now offering a series of Bonderite M-NT thin film conversion coatings that are designed to enhance multi-metal parts, including steel, iron, aluminum, and zinc.

These new generation coatings improve corrosion resistance and overcome the environmental, health, and safety concerns typically associated with traditional phosphating. In addition, they are much thinner than traditional zinc or iron phosphates, and provide a 10 to 30% process cost saving over other methods.

Each of the products offered by the manufacturer suit different pretreatment processes with their own individualized steps. They include the following:

  • Bonderite M-NT 1200: This conversion coating process can be reduced to five or six steps, and take place at an ambient temperature.
  • Bonderite M-NT 20120: This zirconium-based procedure can provide reduced energy consumption, excellent paint adhesion, and no flash-rusting.
  • Bonderite M-NT 2011: This advanced pretreatment system provides a nanoceramic coating to metal substrates, and is formulated to be used on steel, aluminum, and zinc surfaces.
