Nouryon Opens New Production Facility in China

Global specialty chemicals manufacturer Nouryon (Amsterdam, The Netherlands) has begun production at the company’s new manufacturing facility in Ningbo, China. It is at this facility that the company will produce packaging, paints and coatings, and construction end-markets in order to meet increasing demand for these goods and services in the Asia region.

First developed in 2020, Nouryon’s Ningbo-based facility has an annual capacity of 35,000 tons (31,751.5 metric tons) and will produce two key intermediates—tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) and tert-Butyl alcohol (TBA)—that are essential ingredients in the production of polymers and composites.

“Nouryon is pleased to further support our customers across Asia now that operations are up and running at our new China facility,” says Alain Rynwalt, vice president of polymer specialties at Nouryon. “This investment supports Nouryon’s commitment to meet the growing needs of our customers in the region for products such as safe and hygienic food packaging, paint resins and PVC pipes.”

“Asia is a key region for Nouryon and the Ningbo site plays a pivotal role in achieving our growth targets,” says Sobers Sethi, senior vice president of emerging markets and China at Nouryon. “The investment in this new facility underlines our strategy of strengthening our presence in attractive high-growth markets.”

As far back as the early 1920s, Nouryon has had a long history of developing organic peroxide solutions. The company’s new Ningbo facility is part of that tradition—the site is comprised of six manufacturing facilities that produce chelating agents, organic peroxides, ethylene amines, cellulose ethers, and surfactants. In Asia, Nouryon produces organic peroxides in Ningbo, as well as Tianjin, China, Asa, Japan, and Mahad, India.

“Nouryon is the market leader in Polymer Specialties because of our technology leadership, innovation focus and our global manufacturing footprint,” says Johan Landfors, executive vice president and president of technology solutions at Nouryon. “This facility allows Nouryon to further strengthen the reliability of our regional supply of organic peroxides in Asia.”
