The Dum-Dums water tower in Bryan, Ohio, USA, is the winner of the 2023 Tank of the Year competition sponsored by high-performance coatings provider Tnemec Company, Inc. (Kansas City, Missouri, USA).

The water tank was selected by a panel of water tank enthusiasts based on criteria such as artistic value, the significance of the tank to the community, and challenges encountered during the project. Tnemec also cited the immense creativity that went into the Dum-Dums design, which incorporated all aspects of the tank’s structure.

The winning tank—also named as the winner of the People’s Choice competition after 46,500 votes—was painted with Tnemec’s UV-resistant, long-lasting fluoropolymer finish, Series 700 HydroFlon. According to the coating manufacturer, this system should help the design look great for a long time in the Ohio climate.

“The Dum-Dums water tower is owned by the city of Bryan, Ohio, but is located on the Spangler Candy Company factory campus, which is the largest single lollipop manufacturing plant in the world,” Tnemec says in its announcement. “The water in the tower is the same water that is used to manufacture about 12 million Dum-Dums every day. Each of the eight 65-foot-tall [19.8 m] Dum-Dums lollipops represents one of their most popular flavors. They’ve also created a brightly marked, photo-op spot just across the street from the tower where visitors can take photos with the tower in the background.”

As the winner, the Bryan tank will be featured in the month of January in Tnemec’s 2024 water tank calendar. All finalists and nominees will be included in the following months of the calendar.
